01 / Overview

The short version

Your content never leaves your browser.

Stackscraper is a Chrome extension that runs entirely on your device. It reads Substack pages you already have access to and saves the export directly to your local file system. No server receives your thread data, posts, or comments.

This policy describes what limited data Stackscraper and its website do collect, why, and how it is handled. We have tried to write it plainly. If anything is unclear, email us.

02 / Data inventory

What we collect

We separate the extension from the website because they operate very differently.

Data Source Stored where Shared
Substack thread content, posts, comments, replies Extension (local) Your device only Never
Anonymous quota identifier (free tier) Extension, free plan Cloudflare quota server Quota only
Export count and last-export timestamp (Pro) Extension (local) Chrome local storage Never
License key Extension activation Chrome local storage Validation only
Email address Purchase checkout Payment processor Processor only
Page views, referrer, country (no personal data) stackscraper.com visits Cloudflare Web Analytics Never
03 / The extension

Local processing in detail

The Stackscraper Chrome extension reads the current page in your browser using the same session cookies your browser already holds. It does not inject credentials, prompt for your password, or store your Substack login details.

How it works No export data is sent to any Stackscraper server. The extension reads DOM content and Substack API responses within your browser tab, formats the output, and writes the resulting file directly to your local file system via the browser's download API.

Free plan: quota tracking

To enforce the free plan monthly export limit, the extension sends an anonymous identifier to a quota tracking server hosted on Cloudflare. This identifier is either a hashed Google account ID (if you are signed into Chrome) or a randomly generated install ID. No direct identifiers such as your name or email address are transmitted. The identifier is used solely to count exports and reset the counter monthly. It is not linked to your identity and cannot be used to track you across other services.

Pro plan: resume state

If you are on the Pro plan, Stackscraper saves the timestamp of your last export to Chrome's local storage so it can resume from that point on the next run. This data lives only on your device and is not transmitted anywhere.

Permissions used

The extension requests the permissions needed to read Substack pages you are actively viewing. It does not request access to other browser tabs, your browsing history, or any other site. You can review the exact permissions in the Chrome Web Store listing at any time.

04 / stackscraper.com

Website and marketing

The stackscraper.com website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand which pages are visited and where traffic comes from. Cloudflare Web Analytics sets no cookies, uses no localStorage, and does not fingerprint visitors. No consent banner is required for the analytics script itself. Note that other Cloudflare infrastructure features active on the site may set necessary technical cookies independently of analytics.

We do not use advertising pixels, retargeting scripts, or third-party tracking of any kind. If you contact us by email, we store your message and email address to respond to you.

05 / Payments

Payment processing

Pro plan purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy. When you purchase, your payment details are entered directly on Lemon Squeezy's checkout and are never seen or stored by Stackscraper. Lemon Squeezy sends us your email address to deliver the license key.

What we receive from the processor Your email address and order reference, used solely to issue and validate your license key. We do not receive or store your card number, billing address, or any other payment detail.

Lemon Squeezy's privacy practices are governed by their own privacy policy, available at lemonsqueezy.com.

06 / Third parties

Third-party services

Stackscraper uses a small number of third-party services. We do not sell data to any of them.

Service Purpose Data shared
Lemon Squeezy Payment processing and license delivery Email, order ID
Cloudflare Web Analytics Cookieless, anonymized page view metrics No personal data
Email (support) Customer support Your email and message content

We do not share data with data brokers, advertising networks, or any other parties not listed above.

07 / Retention

Data retention

We keep purchase records, including your email address and license key, for as long as your license is active and for a reasonable period thereafter to handle any billing disputes. Support emails are kept until resolved and periodically cleared.

Because the extension stores nothing on our servers, there is no export data for us to retain or delete on your behalf. If you uninstall the extension, Chrome removes all local storage data associated with it.

Deleting your data

If you want us to delete your email address and purchase record, email us at the address below. We will remove it within 30 days unless we are legally required to retain it for billing purposes.

08 / Your rights

Your rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have rights under applicable privacy law, including GDPR if you are in the EEA. These include the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, the right to object to or restrict processing, and the right to data portability.

Because we hold very little personal data, most requests can be resolved quickly. Contact us at the address below and we will respond within 30 days.

If you believe we have not handled your data correctly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

09 / Children

Children's privacy

Stackscraper is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10 / Updates

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of the page. Continued use of the extension or website after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

We will not reduce your rights under this policy without notifying you directly if we hold your email address.

11 / Contact

Questions

If you have any questions about this policy or want to exercise your rights, reach out directly.
